Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to contest specific calls from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
