A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; Β£2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the new year.
The successful bid for the 243kg fish came from the company of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs restaurants throughout Japan and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," stated the business owner, a notable figure at the yearly January sale.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "astonished at the winning bid," adding, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."
This new acquisition tops his own notable purchases:
Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his own record yet again.
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its restaurants nationwide.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
The record-priced tuna was promptly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year starts," said one elated customer.
