NBA game action

Miami put up 86 first-half points versus the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since player Rozier was arrested for suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was additionally detained as part of a extensive FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded 86 first-half points to lead Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and afterwards said Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139 to 119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"Moreover 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
