A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into fried chicken has been replaced after conflicts with its governing body.
The former CEO is departing after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the company's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a new leader.
Rennie, who served at the company for a substantial period, had sought to shift Britain's leading pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, commenting in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He said chicken was the quickest rising food category in the world.
Sources suggest that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his approach and business vision, although Domino's official statement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.
In the autumn, the chain introduced its poultry brand – which Rennie referred to as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is testing it in select stores in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as scheduled, it considers fried chicken as complementary to its main pizza offerings.
Bull, the company chairman, said: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and value creation in the main pizza segment. We are focused on selecting the suitable leader to lead the careful implementation of that development approach.”
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said orders fell by one and a half percent in the third quarter. In the summer, it warned that the takeaway market had “intensified” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a significant fall in interim earnings.
Rival chains are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the closure of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the firm behind its UK venues entered insolvency.
Responding to market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has rolled out light options, such as its Thin & Crispy line of bakes below 400 calories as well as vegan and wheat-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a small has 909 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and previously worked for the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to take on the chief executive role on a full-time basis.
She commented: “The company has a number of active development and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on executing at pace.”
She added these involved further work on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also lacking a permanent chief financial officer until March 16, when Andy Andrea starts from the drinks company C&C Group. For now, Snow serves as acting financial officer.
