Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
