Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence close to the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.
A man and a woman got detained at the site and another man who escaped after the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents caused the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the minister confirmed.
The wounded by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The official thought the detonation had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
