Violent conflicts broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

State officials stated at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Locals have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, along with dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The coordinated mission by civil and military police was preceded by a extended probe.

Many of the individuals are believed to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Broader Context

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the country before important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in late autumn.
