The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
